UK Government Unveils £82.6M AI Research Investment to Advance Healthcare and Innovation

The UK government is investing £82.6 million in cutting-edge AI research, empowering UK scientists to drive breakthroughs in cancer treatment, Alzheimer’s research, and drug discovery. As the AI Action Summit unfolds, this investment reaffirms the UK’s commitment to harnessing artificial intelligence for economic growth, healthcare advancements, and global innovation.

How Much is the UK Government Investing in AI Research?
Through the Research Ventures Catalyst (RVC) programme, the government is allocating £37.9 million across three pioneering AI-driven projects, supplemented by £44.7 million in private co-investment, bringing the total funding to £82.6 million.

The RVC programme introduces flexible funding models to support groundbreaking research, breaking free from traditional funding constraints. This investment will accelerate AI applications in NHS cancer research, drug discovery, and sustainable water management.

Bind Research – £25.8M Investment
- Government funding: £12.9M
- Co-investment: £12.9M
- Focus: Using AI to unlock undruggable proteins, paving the way for treatments of previously incurable diseases.
- Impact: Potentially offering new cures for thousands of patients across the UK.

MEMetic – £13.2M Investment

- Government funding: £6.1M
- Co-investment: £7.1M
- Focus: AI-driven water management and sustainable solutions.
- Impact: Supporting clean water access, lithium recovery for battery recycling, and tackling the climate crisis.

Speaking at the AI Action Summit in France, Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized:
